Ryan, Lessels and Donoghue highlight New England newspaper convention for NSSA
BOSTON
-- Three
longtime award-winning National Sportscasters and Sportswriters
Association members highlighted sports journalism presentations
during the New England Newspaper and Press Association annual
convention at the Boston Park Plaza hotel in February.
Bob Ryan of
the Boston Globe, who will be honored with his fourth national
sportswriter of the year award in May in Salisbury N.C., was joined
by Allen Lessels of the Manchester (N.H.) Union Leader and Mike
Donoghue of The Burlington (Vt.) Free Press, both multi-time
winners as Sportswriter of the Year in their respective
states.
Ryan was
part of an afternoon panel entitled: "New Media: No Time to Keep
Score at the Ball Game."
Lessels was
part of a morning session called: "Too Many Sports, Not Enough
Staff, A Lousy Deadline: What Do You Do?"
Donoghue
served as moderator-panelist on both those sessions and also led a
Sports Roundtable discussion on a variety of wide-ranging topics
facing sports journalists.
It marked
the first convention since the merger of the New England Newspaper
Association and the New England Press Association in July
2009. NENPA represents the interests of more than 700 daily
and non-daily newspapers in the six-state region.
Publishers, editors, writers and students attended the
two-day convention.
Joining
Lessels on the morning panel were Sports Editors Andy Kirkaldy of
the Addison Independent (Middlebury, Vt. ) and Keith Testa of The
Villager (Hillsboro, N.H.).
Ryan joined
Dr. Brett Rhyne, a sports journalism professor at and Damon Kiesow
of The Telegraph (Nashua, N.H.) in the afternoon
session.
Donoghue,
NSSA's immediate past president, had encouraged members during his
presidency to provide more outreach and training in each state in
an effort to promote the profession and to spread the word about
the benefits of a NSSA membership. Donoghue has done similar
sessions in New England and New York and also at the national
convention for the Society of Professional Journalists in
Chicago. NSSA members are encouraged to keep the office
apprised of their public speaking events. Contact Dave Goren
