 Born in Rochester, NY, on September 9,
1882, sportscasting legend Clem McCarthy entertained crowds for
over 30 years as a race announcer. McCarthy was famous for his
gravelly voice and dramatic style which thrilled listeners. He
began his career in 1928, for radio station KYW in Chicago, before
joining the National Broadcasting Company in 1929. His achievements
include calling every Kentucky Derby from 1928 till 1950. McCarthy
was also famous for covering boxing; including the 1938 return bout
between Joe Lewis and Max Schmeling. McCarthy died in 1962. He was
inducted into the NSSA Hall of Fame on Mar 31, 1970.
